The country, which is known as the land of the rising sun, is located on the Asian continent, precisely in the East Asian region. Japan is an archipelagic country, consisting of 6,852 islands spread from north to south with 4 main islands namely Hokkaido, Honsu, Shikoku and Kyushu.
The country of Japan was formed since 660 BC, no wonder Japan is one of theoldest countries in the world. The establishment of the Japanese state was carried out by Emperor Jimmu for the first time and became the pioneer of the monarchical chain in Japan to this day.
Beginning with the New Year holidays, January is one of the colder months on the calendar. A spike in travel during the holiday season can make it difficult to book tickets and accomodations early in the month.
Yuki Matsuri, also known as “Sapporo snow festival”, is held for about a week in Hokkaido. This festivity is one of Japan’s most popular winter events, starting out in 1950 when a group of high-school students built snow statues in the local park. It has since developed into a huge, cultural event featuring snow and ice sculptures which people compete in by making their own, it attracts more than two million visitors from Japan and across the world every year.
With the peak of winter past, the stage is set for new beginnings as Japan eases into spring. Plum blossoms continue to bloom in parts of central Japan and further north. The colorful Hinamatsuri girls’ festival is held nationwide on March 3 and cherry blossoms start blooming in Tokyo and other warmer locations to herald the start of spring proper.
Although the weather in March is significantly warmer and more spring-like than February, temperatures can drop suddenly. Skiing and snowboarding are still possible at most resorts and languid hot spring excursions remain a popular way to spend some of the coldest days.
By early to late July, the rainy season has either ended or is winding down. Temperatures and humidity rise steadily and summer gets into full swing. Popular pastimes include mountain hikes, beach trips, baseball and beer gardens. Be sure to include a selection of light clothing when you pack and don’t spare the sun block. Tenjin Matsuri is one of the largest three seasonal festivals held in Japan, and is celebrated annually in July. The festival starts with a traditional procession at the temple, followed by parades through the city.
For most of Japan, November brings brisk air, clear skies, and radiant autumn foliage, making it a pleasant month to travel. The weather does gradually become chilly, especially in the mornings and evenings, but a hot spring excursion is a simple remedy for any cold spells you may encounter. Keep an eye out for Christmas lights and illumination events—many of which also begin in November.
